"FRP holiday production leaves them rolling in the aisles" posted by ~Ray

Flat Rock Playhouse's production of A Tuna Christmas is a masterpiece of comic timing and lightning fast costume changes. Two of Flat Rock's favorite actors. Scott Treadway and Michael Edwards create 22 characters some in such rapid succession that the audience can't imagine how the changes were made. That's one of the reasons that the characters take on a life of their own and the actors fade into the background. Greater Tuna the original play that brought Tuna. Texas to the attention of theater audiences all over the country was written by Jaston Williams. Joe Sears and Ed Howard more than 20 years ago based on a political cartoon and a party skit. The comedy found an instant audience and eventually the original stars. Williams and Sears found themselves performing for m ore than a year Off-Broadway at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City. The great popularity of Greater Tuna demanded a sequel and in 1994. A Tuna Christmas opened on Broadway with a Tony Award nomination for Joe Sears as best actor. As the play opens the two radio station announcers. Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie are reading the news which includes the run down on the annual Christmas Yard Display contest which Vera Carp has won for the past 14 years. Vera's outdone herself this year with a herd of real sheep and the holy family made of plastic and lit from within. However. Didi Snavely's 16-foot tree made of aluminum pie pans and lit with floodlights is also a likely candidate and a dark horse entry from Inita Goodwin and Helen Bedd two life size Texas Cowboys stuffed in stockings hanging from their balcony has also caught the judges' eye. The Christmas Phantom a prankster that the sheriff has never been able to catch may change the circumstances of the contest. The Christmas Yard Display contest is central to the plot as is the Christmas Phantom. Everyone in town thinks that the Phantom is Bertha Bumiller's son. Stanley -- even Bertha. Stanley's about to get off probation by doing community service appearing in A Christmas Carol at the community theater but the production is threatened by Dixie Deberry who has promised to turn off the lights at the theater if the electric bill isn't paid. These characters come and go but they all have wonderful mannerisms of their own. Bertha for example always takes off her right earring before she answers the phone -- and then holds the receiver to her left ear. Helen Bedd a waitress at the Tastee Cream always does a two-footed bounce before she picks up the phone no matter how stressful the circumstances are. For the audience some moments are reminiscent of "The Carol Burnett Show," where Tim Conway and Harvey Korman did their best to break each other up. Treadway and Edwards who have done this show at Flat Rock Playhouse several times have that kind of relationship and it can be very funny. A couple of the moments on opening night however looked to be purely circumstantial. Edwards as Joe Bob Lipsey the director of A Christmas Carol banged his fist on the counter of the Tastee Cream and hit the metal edge instead of the top. It obviously hurt and he shook it off while trying to stay in character. A few minutes later. Treadway as Helen Bedd fell flat on his face while making an exit and left Edwards again struggling to keep a straight face. There is a lot of pathos in the comedy. A few people escape from Tuna. Texas over the course of the play and new relationships are forged. The characters as well as the players make this a show that everyone should see.

"Here?s the view from the retail aisles" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-01 11:13:11

For the big-box players this coming weekend is a make-or-break moment. The day after Thanksgiving is sometimes called Black Friday for its role in taking retailers from the red (negative) to the black (positive). We spoke with Pete Van Dyke of Van Dyke Appliances in Forest Grove. Cari Saxe of Gaston Feed. Rae Weaver of Banks Hardware. Vickey Wallace from Oregon Orchards Hazelnut Grower’s Cooperative in Cornelius and Kristen Ling of A Framer’s Touch in Forest Grove. Here’s what they had to say. What percentage of your annual sales do you expect to make this pass? Pete Van Dyke: It’s a good weekend but it’s only nominally more than a regular weekend. It isn’t for us a make-or-break weekend Rae Weaver: A lot of do-it-yourselfers we’ll get them because they have a nice long pass. Cari Saxe: We have a big ad that comes out after Thanksgiving so we offer a lot of extra sales. It’s a pretty big weekend because everybody’s out shopping Cut-throat pricing is the label of the game during the big Black Friday push. As an independent retailer how do you compete on price? Vickey Wallace: We don’t (compete on price) because we’re somewhat specialized. We are doing a sale but our products have a pretty good demand without having a sale. Pete Van Dyke: The biggest way that we compete besides having lower overhead is by belonging to Brand Source which gives us the buying power of 2,500 members. So we’re very competitive with all the big regional and national players. Rae Weaver: We try to buy bulk so we can get the better pricing. Our niche is in the fact that we’re super friendly and we go out of the way to do the extra mile thing Cari Saxe: I’m very competitive. We’re always shopping to make sure that we’re in the ballpark. I’ve found out recently that we’re lower than some of the big-box stores — that’s wonderful news. Kristen Ling: Our everyday year-round pricing is always competitive. We do not believe in gimmicks. Is the traffic on the weekend mostly regulars or people you’ve never seen? Are there any out-of-towners in the mix? Pete Van Dyke: Most of my customers will come within about a 20-mile radius. Some travel from Carlton. Vernonia and Manning. Rae Weaver: Mostly regulars some of our power pump customers come from Portland. Cari Saxe: We get a lot of regulars and that’s where I’ve always tried to focus. Our community is very important to us and we go the extra mile. We provide service beyond belief but we get lots of new people coming in too. What about staffing? Do you hire temporary workers? Or do you just put in the extra hours? Pete Van Dyke: We’ll just work extra hours. It’s kind of fun people are just in a little exceed mood during the holidays. It’s fun being busy. Cari Saxe: We’re pretty well covered. I like to communicate extra staff on the weekends. We’re open Sundays now and we’re trying to give the customers extra time. We’ve found that it’s a very successful day. It’s been 12 months but can you remember what was hot a year ago? Pete Van Dyke: This year it’s LCD displays. And Traeger pellet grills are comfort real popular. Cari Saxe: We have a whole new variety of Carhartt attire in. We’ve got some new designs and things like that. Vickey Wallace: We have a lot of standbys that people depend upon and we furnish lots of samples. The phones must be ringing off the hook. What’s the weirdest question you’ve ever gotten? Pete Van Dyke: Sometimes they’ll be looking for parts for something that’s 50-60 years old and they just don’t make parts for that long. Rae Weaver: Sometimes people will come into the hardware store and they have no idea what it is or what it’s called and they have to draw a conceive of and we have to take it around and figure out what it is they’re looking for. Vickey Wallace: We displace walnut harvesters but sold out last year and haven’t found another outlet for them. Cari Saxe: A customer came in looking for a “nut-picker-upper.” I had four of them and when they found out I had them. I had none. The people I’d bought them from were bought out.

"Walking The Aisles of a Grocery Store" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 15:12:33

I had just arrived at the grocery store measure night when I came across an old high educate friend who I had not seen in probably change state to a year. She and her agree sister and I used to run on the same high school go across country team for four years and during that measure. I was one of the few who could tell them apart. It wasn’t until measure night however that I was informed that I had been calling them by the wrong names for the past number of years. It seems that my ability to tell them apart had disappeared over time. Yah I know… memory and time does some crazy things to you!Anyways back on track! It was great running across her last night as we spent at least twenty minutes reminiscing. We then waved our goodbyes and headed onto our own trails around the grocery store. By the time I made it to the checkout lie. I ran across her at least three times after that and each time we waved and said “hi.” It got pretty funny and it got to the point that I would look for her each time while turning into different aisles. By the measure it was over we probably spent an additional seven or eight minutes more in conversation and laughter. Now that was authorise since we enjoyed each other’s company… but what about that person who you don’t really undergo anything in common with and would have been happy enough to simply grimace and share no more than a two minute conversation with by asking how the kids spouse and job was?undergo you ever been in that situation before? You enter the grocery store and run head on into a casual acquaintance who you know just enough to nod and ask how the family is and then you see them every aisle you turn into? You don’t really want to speak with them beyond the first time and yet you don’t be to be ignorant and simply do by them. It never fails… It seems desire every measure I go to the grocery hold on. I run across someone who fits that category of the “casual acquaintance.” I communicate to them and ask the socially acceptable questions move on my way and them run into them in the produce aisle. What do you say? “Hey look prunes are on sale!” Then again in the juice aisle with a bottle of prune juice in your hands... “Yep. I’ve been pretty irregular lately!” A few minutes later in the Cereal aisle… “Yah. 100% Bran is my favorite cereal!”It gets to the point that you feel that you have to scope out every aisle before making your turn. Now I undergo gotten to be pretty good at mastering the skill of avoidance but what about when you are trying to forbid two populate? You might as well give up and go home! Now there was a measure when I ran across my sister but that was no big deal alter? Well for her it was! By the time I had passed her in about every aisle. I had snuck enough extra food into her cart to feed another family. She later discovered it all in the work checkout lie. She has yet to concede and forget!Being the Christmas toughen however. I intend to mend my ways and become more of a conversationalist in the aisles because it is the toughen of merriment. I will become a new man… at least until the end of the month. Who knows… maybe it ordain be me over the holidays that everyone else will be avoiding! Hi Portia! I accept when you say that it is nice to catch up but then I never get all my groceries done in time! LOLHi Janice! I know what you convey but I still feel guilty. I shop at the largest grocery displace in town... Maybe that's my problem! :-)Hi Cheryl! Well there is this one work that talks to me as if we go way approve and I think that maybe she is right but I am too afraid to ask her especially since it has been a couple of years since we started chatting there. I’m not the same person I once was. Some might say I have changed for the worse but I experience different! I now look at a lot of things from a different perspective. I no longer worry about what people think of me though I do hope that all look at me in a positive light. I am in my forties. I have two children who often drive me crazy but who I love with every fibre of my being. My son is still in high school during the day and is in the “World of Warcraft” with millions of other people at night. During the day my daughter is studying to change state a film and television producer and at night is at her computer chatting to her world wide friends. I am a educate teacher who teaches special education to a few of Ontario’s young populate who fit under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act. I apply biking to keep fit running if I want to re-injure my knee creative writing to entice my creative juices bugging the hell out of the staff I bring home the bacon with in order to acquire entertainment (or maybe just a turn morbidity to make life excruciating for them!) and a few other things I ordain not mention in request to protect the identities of the innocent (you experience who you are!) Welcome to me!
